Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse in which false information is presented with the intent of making a victim doubt his or her own memoryperception and sanity. It may range simply from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents ever occurred, up to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of disorienting the victim.

what wikipedia fails to note: a person can be gaslit by an inanimate object. i was gaslit by an inanimate object.

for 2 years it toyed with my sanity, mostly through backfocusing, and unreplicable errors. for 2 years i thought, “how am i becoming a worse photographer?” i’m pretty sure it cackled and schemed in my camera bag, holding out for the day in which i gave up entirely.

it almost succeeded, until my sister-in-law did some research and found out about a round of nikon d7000s that were inadequately tested and produced all kinds of errors. our cameras were purchased in that window.

so the d7000 didn’t win; it is now dead to me, and i had the chance to test a friend’s canon 5d on a recent visit to the huntington library in southern california.

my canon is in the mail.
